John 12 closes Jesus' public ministry. Jesus' public work is completed; his signs have been displayed in the world; his discourses have been delivered. And yet, the signs have been rejected.1

Mary anoints Jesus with expensive nard, and Jesus links it with his burial, which Mary's act anticipates.2 It showed her humility, for it was a servant's work to attend to the feet.3

At the triumphal entry, Jesus rides a donkey, coming as a king, but not as a warrior-conqueror (who would normally ride a horse or be drawn in a chariot).4 Then Gentiles arrive, and the coming of the Greeks (v. 20) precipitates Jesus' destined "hour."5

Jesus explains that just as a seed must "die" to give life (v. 24), so Jesus must die in order to give life to the world. This same law applies to disciples.6 Regarding Satan, the cross would seem to be his triumph; in fact, it was his defeat.7

For application, Jesus wants our personal devotion along with our praise and celebration. But too often we only see him through the issues of the day.

Dear Heavenly Father, grant us the wisdom to trust you with our lives, and to expect nothing less than your love and kindness towards we your children. Lord we ask that you strengthen our hearts in the Christian Hope, the Christian Hope and Freedom that only comes in and through Jesus Christ!
